Mosque graffiti attack

VANDALS have scrawled racial slurs on the walls and dome of the Ar-Rukun Mosque in Rockingham in an attack its leader says is “a part of life”.

Offenders smeared graffiti in black and red paint on the sides and top of the Atwood Way building and smashed lighting some time between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Several reports of vandalism were made to police, including one of smashed glass found in the mosque car park on Saturday morning.

The Islamic Multifunctional Centre, located next to the mosque, was left untouched.

Rockingham Ar-Rukun Mosque religious leader Imam Abdul Jalil Ahmad said it was the first time the mosque had been hit by graffiti, though vandals had damaged the building several times over the years.

The gates to the mosque had been damaged several times and the star and crescent moon, placed on the dome of the mosque when it was first erected, had been stolen.

Imam Ahmad said he had no reason to be angry about the latest incident, describing it as a part of life.

“We feel bad about it, but what can you do,” he said.

“We are not worried, we know it’s going to happen. We are prepared to accept it as reality. It cannot be reversed now.”

Forensic police have investigated the incident and inquiries are
continuing.
